Casting treasures

Do you have a precious treasure that you would like to have cast into silver? A treasure that can be kept safe while you carry around a silver copy as part of a piece of jewellery, keyring, bookmark or other keepsake.

How it works

Once I receive your treasure, I will weigh it and work out how much sterling silver I need to use to create the cast. I will then prepare the treasure within the flask using Delft clay which is incredibly fine so all the details will be copied. Once the funnel (sprue) has been cut out and the original treasure removed, the flask is closed. The metal will be melted within a crucible and then poured into the flask. Once cooled, the cast copy is removed, all pieces of excess silver cut and filed off and then cast is made into a piece of jewellery.

Ammonite set within flask, pressed within the delft clay. Airholes being created for air to leave the flask to help the pour of the metal. Silver being melted by torches and poured into a flask A silver ammonite cast being removed from the sand casting flask A selection of cast items including an ammonite, shell and Boba Fett helmet.

What can be cast

Ideally treasures need to be solid but sturdy shells will also work. The more texture and detail on the treasure the better!

  • Shells
  • Fossils
  • Teeth (human or animal)
  • Plastic toys
  • Wooden items
  • Arrow heads
  • Coins

What can my cast be made into?

Here are some ideas of what you could have made with your piece.

  • A pendant on a chain or leather cord.
  • A charm for a bangle.
  • A keyring.
  • A charm to be attached to a bookmark.
  • An ornament with the sprue still attached.

Casting “no-nos”

  • Items made from glass.
  • Items that are very fragile and could not with-stand clay being compacted on top.

Cost

The cost will be determined by a few factors:-

  • The weight of your treasure. The bigger and heavier the item, the more metal will be needed.
  • The price of silver at the time.
  • How much time is needed to ‘tidy-up’ the cast.
  • What you would like to turn it into.

For a guideline the arrow head or ammonite with leather cord costs approximately £85.

What else is included in the cost?

Each cast will be sent to the Assay Office in London to be hallmarked and then along with your original precious treasure, will be sent back to you in a gift box and via Royal Mail Special Delivery for added security.
